A telephone rang somewhere in the room, six, seven, eight rings. Dan reached over fumbling with the handset. "Hello."

"This is Professor Kingston. I must talk to Dr. Locke. Do you know where she is?"

Dan hesitated not sure if he should reveal her presence.

"What is it?" she asked, now awake.

"Your Professor."

"Tell him you will give me a message," she instructed.

"I can give her a message," he spoke into the receiver.

"The crystal has been stolen. I must talk to her as soon as possible."

"Oh no." she said listening in on the conversation.

At 10:00 a.m. they met with the Professor at the museum. He led them to the display. It was undisturbed except for the missing crystal.

"What happened?" she asked.

"I am not sure," said Kingston.

"Don't you have guards?" Dan asked.

"Yes. Of course," he shouted.

"Didn't they see anything?" Sandra asked.

"The guards have a strange story to tell. They say a bright light appeared outside the museum about 2:00 a.m. Then two men or what they thought were two men came through the door. The guards saw a beam of light and that's the last thing they remember. What do you make of it?"

"Someone, who knows the secret of the crystal, went to a lot of trouble to steal it," Dan supposed.

"The only one who knew was Sheik Ameir and he died in the helicopter crash," Sandra argued.

"But his secret didn't die with him," Dan said. "Do you mind if we have a look around Professor?"

"No. If it will help, go right ahead. I would really like to get the crystal back."

Dan motioned to Sandra and she followed him outside to the grounds. He noticed the deep tire tracks on the grass. "I was thinking they would need a truck to haul it away. We should check on truck rentals in the area."

"You don't think they would be that careless, do you?"

"Sometimes, even professionals leave clues."

"Ok. Let's check on it then," she agreed.

They said good bye to a disappointed Professor Kingston and drove off to find the nearest rental agency.

It was late in the afternoon when they had just finished visiting their fourth rental agency. Sandra was ready to give up. "This isn't getting us anywhere."

"One more," insisted Dan.

"Might as well. The day is almost over anyway." She assumed it would be a dead end too.

They stopped in front of the last rental business in the area, the Easy Truck Rental building. Dan walked up to the door with Sandra following and they went in. The agent behind the counter stepped over and asked, "What can I do for you folks today?"

Dan brought out a leather folder and flashed a detective’s badge. This was a tactic he used to get information with a minimum of trouble. Most people didn't question his supposed authority and he used the badge discretely.

"We're looking for a truck that was rented in the past few days. It was involved in a burglary. We would appreciate it if we could see your rental list."

The agent reacted nervously at first then he managed to find his voice.
